I tried my hand again with the now “primitive flower II”. The first one for Illustration Friday had a blemish on the top left. I just made it on a whim, experimenting with the walnut ink I had just got using a journal page that wasn’t fully prepped. But I loved it so much I had to show it even though it was imperfect. I don’t like this as well, spontaneity has it’s virtues! Forcing, planning too much doesn’t seem to work for me.
Now here is a spontaneous piece, I sat thinking of trying another “primitive” but it turned into a fig, yes, that is supposed to be a fig! lol It is one of my favorite fruits! My grandmother had two fig trees when I was growing up. we would climb into it’s low twisted branches and just stuff ourselves with delicious figs! I call the painting “childhood sweetness” because that’s what it was, sweet tasting and a sweet a memory!
I have new art journal pages on my flikr if you want to take a look I would love for you too. And don’t forget to stop by my store at Esty!

ReplyDeleteUsing your "primitive flower" as your new "signature" is a great idea. It is simple, beautiful and reminds me of something just beginning - more great things to come.
ReplyDeleteFig's are one of my favorites also (served with blue cheese)yum!
Thanks for the comment you left on My Blog for I.F.'s Primitive.
ReplyDeleteFor me, Art is about a message.
Not everyone will get "It".
That's to be expected.

Take heart! I'm not an accomplished seamstress at all. In fact, at the end of my 2nd year of home ec when everyone else was making outfits, I was "allowed" to make placemats. :-0 Yeah, I was THAT BAD. But art quilting doesn't require expert sewing skills :-)
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to a vidcast that I think you might find interesting:
http://www.bonniemccaffery.com/vidcasts/021.html
This quilt artist doesn't piece or applique. She simply works on a design wall, pins it all together right on the wall and then takes it to the sewing machine. She basically sews the pieces together at the same time she quilts. BUT ALSO in the vidcast she shows a way of "quilting" on canvas which might be a really fun thing for you to try.
And you might want to check out the other vidcasts, too. The nice thing is Bonnie interviews all kinds of quilt artists who specialize in a variety of techniques.
I took Bonnie's "Painted Faces" class last summer. She now has that on DVD which I'm thinking of getting 'cause it's easy for the memory to lose important details :-)

Anyway, hope this is helpful!
wow, you make lost sleep look so good! These really are dreamy depictions of Spring! xo, Monica

I know exactly what you mean about spontaneity, I'm not much good at planning either. But I'm teaching myself to stick with a piece long enough to explore and see where it can take me even if drawing something over and over again doesn't feel natural to me.
ReplyDeleteYou mention fig trees, and I too looooove fresh figs, just picked off the tree. I stayed in Crete for several months and the reason I stayed so long was because I wanted to be there for fig season! You've just brought up some fond memories for me. Thanks. And thank you for visiting the Serenity Now blog. It's desperately in need of updating, but glad you enjoyed your visit.
EVERYONE,
ReplyDeletethank you, Thank YOu, THANK YOU! ..for your amazing support and kind words. i am amazed by what you all have said, i can hardly believe it! thanks :)
luv,
dinah
Getting the balance between spontaneity and planning is crucial. I do a lot of creative writing, and I have the same problem.
ReplyDeletePrimitive Flower (the first) appeals to me just a tad more, but II came out nicely. I really like the Primitive Fig a lot - the colors are great and I feel just a touch of whimsy in the leaf.
ReplyDelete~M~
i really like the primitive flower II. it is very lovely; i am a huge fan of those colors. i've not used walnut ink yet. i'm going to check it out -- you've inspired me!!
